Hell’s Gate is unlike almost every other national park in Kenya. This is the park where you cycle or walk through the landscape rather than watching it from the window of a vehicle. The result is a completely different kind of wildlife experience, more immediate, more physical, and genuinely exhilarating. Located near Lake Naivasha in the Rift Valley, about 90 kilometres from Nairobi, Hell’s Gate is defined by dramatic basalt columns, a towering gorge, hot spring geothermal activity, and open savannah where zebras, buffalos, baboons, and giraffes graze around you without any fence or vehicle between you and them. The park inspired the landscape of the Disney film The Lion King. The Gorge is the highlight for most visitors. You can walk or scramble through it with a local guide, wading through a narrow canyon carved by ancient water flows, past steaming geothermal vents and extraordinary rock formations. It takes about two to three hours and is entirely manageable without technical climbing skills. The best time to visit Hell’s Gate is during the dry seasons from June to October and January to March, when the gorge walk is safest and the tracks are easiest to cycle. The park can be visited year-round, and because it is so close to Nairobi, it makes an easy day trip or weekend outing. Accommodation is available at the Naivasha Lake area nearby, ranging from budget campsites to mid-range lodges. The combination of Hell’s Gate and Lake Naivasha, where you can take a boat to see hippos and birds, makes for one of the best affordable getaways from Nairobi.
