What to know before visiting Lamu

Lamu is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlements in East Africa, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The island sits off Kenya’s northern coast near the border with Somalia, and getting there is part of the experience. There are no cars on the island. People, goods, and everything else move by donkey or by boat. What makes Lamu special is the layering of history on every narrow street. Arab merchants, Portuguese traders, and Omani sultans all passed through here, and the architecture reflects that mix. Ornately carved wooden doors, whitewashed coral-stone buildings, and rooftop terraces overlooking the dhow harbour create an atmosphere that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Kenya. The best time to visit Lamu is between June and September or December to March. These are the drier months when the climate is comfortable and the sea is calmer. The Lamu Cultural Festival, usually held in November, is one of the most vibrant celebrations in coastal Kenya and worth planning around if you can. Things to do in Lamu include exploring Lamu town on foot, taking a dhow sailing trip, visiting the Lamu Museum and the old fort, and relaxing on Shela Beach, one of the quietest and most beautiful stretches of sand on the Kenyan coast. Day trips to the nearby islands of Manda and Pate are also popular. Getting to Lamu involves a flight from Nairobi or Mombasa to Manda Airport, followed by a short boat crossing to the island. The journey takes about an hour and a half from Nairobi. Once you arrive, most guesthouses and hotels are clustered in Lamu town or in the quieter village of Shela.
