There are surf contests held in beautiful places. Fiji, Hawaii, Tahiti. Crystal clear water, swaying palms, and perfect reef breaks. But there is one event that stands in a category entirely its own, sitting at the intersection of elite surfing and unapologetic luxury. The Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy at Kuda Huraa is widely recognised as the most luxurious surf competition on the planet, and everything about it lives up to that title.

What Is the Surfing Champions Trophy?

Now in its 14th edition, the Surfing Champions Trophy is an invitation only event held annually at the Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, set against the legendary break known as Sultans in the North Malé Atoll. The 2026 edition is scheduled for September 4 to 11, building on the extraordinary success of the 2025 competition that left the surfing world talking for months.

Unlike traditional surf contests, this event celebrates three distinct board styles: the single fin, the twin fin, and the thruster. Competitors ride each format across separate divisions before the grand final, testing their versatility and creativity across different board disciplines in the same perfect tropical conditions. It is a format that rewards pure surfing expression over points chasing, which is part of why the world's best keep coming back.

The 2025 Edition: Drama, Brilliance and a Perfect Ten

The 2025 competition delivered one of the most memorable moments in the event's history. Tahitian powerhouse Michel Bourez tore his hamstring during the twin fin division, with many expecting his campaign to be over. Instead, after a night of intensive medical treatment, Bourez powered back onto the water and won both the thruster division and the grand final back to back. He capped off a remarkable comeback with the event's only perfect ten score, in the final minutes of the grand final, in front of stunned spectators aboard luxury yachts.

Australian Hall of Famer Owen Wright won the single fin division on day one, defeating Bourez in a tightly fought final. Brazilian star Jesse Mendes, a former Championship Tour contender and Triple Crown of Surfing winner, also featured in the lineup, bringing flair and power to the competition. Young Australian prodigy Sierra Kerr made history as the youngest competitor ever to take part in the event, following in the footsteps of her father Josh Kerr who lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2019.

The Setting: Kuda Huraa

The Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa is not a typical surf camp. This is a private island resort designed around understated elegance, where beach villas with private pools sit steps from white sand beaches and overwater villas offer direct access to the turquoise lagoon. The resort features three signature dining venues offering flavours from India, Asia, and Italy. The Island Spa provides post session treatments, and the infinity pool delivers the kind of views that make you forget there are surf waves just minutes away by boat.

During competition week, the resort hosts lavish cocktail parties each evening at different locations around the island, where guests, competitors, and their families mingle in relaxed luxury. It is this blurring of competitive surfing and genuine hospitality that makes the Surfing Champions Trophy unlike any other event in the surfing world.

Watching the Contest

Spectators staying at Four Seasons Kuda Huraa during competition week get to watch the action from the best seats possible, aboard the resort's luxury surf vessels positioned right beside the contest lineup at Sultans. The waves at Sultans are a right hander that delivers long, powerful walls ideal for all three board styles. The southwest monsoon season, which runs from June to October, brings the biggest swells and makes September the sweet spot for world class surfing conditions.

Beyond watching the pros, guests can get in the water themselves. The resort's surf school, run by professionals from Tropicsurf of Noosa, Australia, caters to everyone from beginners starting out in the calm lagoon to experienced surfers looking to tackle Sultans, Jails, and Honky's alongside the competition.

Why This Event Matters for Surf Travel

The Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy has quietly redefined what a surf trip can look like. It proves that chasing world class waves does not have to mean roughing it in a beach shack. For a growing segment of travellers, particularly those who discovered surfing later in life or those who want to share a surf holiday with a partner or family who might not share the same obsession for riding waves, this event represents a compelling model.

The Maldives is already one of the world's most sought after travel destinations, and adding the energy of a world class surf competition to the Four Seasons experience creates something genuinely rare.
